Edelboim Lieberman attorneys Brett Lieberman and Alexander Lewitt have been selected to lead the Financial Literacy Task Force of the Florida Bar Association’s Business Law Section. The Financial Literacy Task Force advocates for making financial literacy and education mandatory in Florida high schools.

We are pleased to announce that Partner Brett Lieberman and Associate Attorney Alexander Lewitt have been selected to lead the Financial Literacy Task Force of the Florida Bar Association’s Business Law Section. Mr. Lieberman will serve as the Financial Literacy Task Force’s Chair, and Mr. Lewitt will serve as Vice Chair.

About the Financial Literacy Task Force

As explained by the Business Law Section, the Financial Literacy Task Force’s mission is, “to develop a strategy to make financial literacy and education a high school requirement in Florida.” As the Business Law Section goes on to explain:

“The Task Force’s vision is to ensure the financial well-being for all individuals and families in Florida through financial education in high school and college. In furtherance of this vision, the Task Force develops strategic direction for policymaking, legislation, awareness, and coordination with stakeholders to ensure that all young individuals have the financial literacy to make informed financial decisions during their adult lives through early financial education.”

The Task Force was established after two studies conducted in 2018 found that a significant financial literacy gap exists in the United States. One of the studies found that only a third of adults could answer at least four out of five basic financial literacy questions, while the other found that just 22 percent of 15-year-old students demonstrated a basic level of financial literacy (with just 12 percent demonstrating the highest level of financial skills assessed). By focusing on making financial literacy and education mandatory in Florida high schools, the Task Force seeks to close this gap statewide.
